Celebrating the life of
Elizabeth (Doll) Ann Miller
October 01, 1950 - September 29, 2026
Elizabeth “Doll” Ann Miller, a beloved physician, devoted mother, accomplished athlete, and generous member of the Savannah community, passed away peacefully September 29th at age 75, with her daughters by her side.
Born in Oriskany, NY on October 1st, 1950, Doll was the only daughter of George and Harriett Story. She had 4 doting brothers, which earned her the nickname “Doll”, and an idyllic childhood in upstate NY. Her childhood was marked by an accomplished golf career. Her greatest national achievement came at age 17, when she won the U.S. Girl’s Junior Championship. She continued her golf career at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida where she met her husband, George “Woods” Miller.
Following college she attended SUNY Upstate Medical University and received her medical degree in 1977. She completed an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, during which time she had her first child, Jenny. Doll completed an oculoplastics fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital/University of Rochester in 1986. Her second daughter, Betsy, was born during this time.
After training she practiced in Syracuse, NY for a short time prior to making the move that would define the next chapter of her life. In 1987, the family made Savannah their home, where she helped grow Georgia Eye Institute and became a respected ophthalmologist not only for her skill and dedication, but also for the genuine care she showed her patients.
Doll’s remarkable life extended well beyond her medical practice. She embraced life with extraordinary wanderlust and limitless energy. As an avid runner, she completed over 50 marathons by the age of 60. One of her proudest accomplishments was running 60 miles on her 60th birthday to raise money for the humane society, an organization especially close to her heart. Her love of climbing led her to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro with her family, to Everest base camp, and to the peaks of many other mountains. She completed the Lake Placid Ironman at 55 years old. Doll was the pinnacle of strength and determination.
Her remarkable pursuits in her professional career and athletic endeavors were only a small part of who she was. Doll was always unabashedly herself. Everyone has a favorite Doll story—something funny she did that they love to tell. Much to her daughters’ dismay, some of these stories involve liberal choices in attire while exercising. She once transported an erg on the top of the family car to a vacation so that she could get her rowing workout completed. She went to Woodstock, spent a year abroad at sea and wrecked 100 cars. She took one daughter skydiving for her 16th birthday, and took both of them hiking on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. She sought experiences and being present with the ones she loved above all else. She lived for adventures and never stopped exploring. She loved animals and the simple pleasures in life. A perfect day for Doll was a morning cup of coffee, a day spent exercising and at the dog park followed by a glass of wine with a dinner of salmon and broccoli. When asked about Doll, most people shake their heads and comment that, if only she had a GoPro recording her life, it would have made for an amazing reality show. Doll lived a million lives in one lifetime. She was an awe-inspiring legend who has passed her adventurous spirit and some of her mischievous ways on to her daughters and grandchildren.
Doll leaves behind her two loving daughters, Jenny Bromley and Betsy von Trapp (Jake), and 6 cherished grandchildren: Emma, Liza Grace, Isabella, Brooks, Jack and Charlotte. She is preceded in death by her husband, Woods Miller.
The family will hold a celebration of life for this remarkable woman on October 24th at 10am at Landings Harbor Marina. A celebratory run will take place prior to the ceremony.
The family encourages all who loved Doll to come with a story they loved about her and athletic attire is requested. They ask that a donation to the Greater Humane Society of Savannah be given in lieu of flowers.
